Students read "The Dot" at the beginning of the year and created a collaborative piece showing concentric circles!
First grade color mixing Students began this project by learning how to make secondary colors using only primary colors. Students drew six different size rectangles to create their own color wheel. Given red, yellow, and blue, students painted the primary colors and then mixed the secondary colors to paint in the purple, green, and orange rectangles. Once dry, students cut out their rectangles to use as buildings in a city collage. Students were encouraged to use their imagination while creating their cities by adding as many details as they could think of.
First graders spent first quarter learning all about lines! They discussed line quality and how there are many different ways to draw a line. Their final project involved drawing themselves with crazy hair made out of all the lines we had discussed throughout the quarter.
For a fun end of the year project, students in first grade were shown how to draw a bird house and were then able to paint it using fun neon colors.
First grade students created these adorable mixed media pieces of artwork using air dry clay, popsicle sticks, and tissue paper. Here are some examples of the cutest things I've seen all year!
First grade students created these beautiful works of art in many stages. In the first stage, students painted a background using horizontal lines. In the second stage, students collaged their penguins and drew an iceberg for the penguin to stand on. After the penguin was attached to the background, students painted snow using q-tips. Once the paint was dry, students created warm clothes for the penguins using scraps of paper. Here are the results!
Students in first grade practiced drawing lots of spiral lines before completing their final drawing. Here are the beautiful results to all of their hard work!
Pablo Picasso GuitarsStudents have been learning about the artist Pablo Picasso and created a cubist background for a Picasso-like guitar. Oil Resist Watercolor PaintingsStudents learned about the magical properties of oil and water for this beautiful snowflake artwork. Students used white oil pastel and then blue and purple watercolor on top. When the watercolor goes over the oil pastel, the oil repels the water revealing their drawing!
