Students read "The Dot" at the beginning of the year and created a collaborative piece showing concentric circles!
In celebration of Black History month, students in 2nd grade looked at the artwork above from Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series. In paintings and words, Lawrence told his community's story of African Americans who journeyed from the rural South to the urban North between the World Wars in search of a better life, a movement known as the Great Migration.
Students worked in teams to study the work of art seen above and were asked to respond to the work using found objects. Students collaboratively created a new work of art and explained how their new creation responds directly to the artwork of Jacob Lawrence. Here are some shots of their teamwork and final results! Second graders reviewed the different parts of an insect such as the head, antennae, and torso before creating these symmetrical drawings. Students drew 1/2 of their insect using an oil pastel. They folded their paper in half and rubbed the paper over and over so the heat of their hand would transfer the oil pastel to the other side of the paper. Once the first half was transferred students had a symmetrical drawing! Here are the beautiful insects being painted!
DrawingsStudents began this project by studying Van Gogh's 'Sunflower Vase' painting. They each created a vase using shapes and then added their own variation of flowers to go inside. PaintingsStudents finished their work by painting with watercolor over their drawings. Students learned the technique of overlapping paint colors.
Students in 2nd grade have been learning about the artistic style of Vincent Van Gogh. Students created an oil pastel sky using small quick strokes like Van Gogh uses in much of his work. Students also learned how to draw buildings by using the simple lines that make an arrow! If you look closely, you may see some familiar Chicago buildings in their drawings!
