Students were introduced to the art of stop motion animation for this fun and creative project made by the 7th graders! I just love how unique each of them are and how brave the students were to try something new for the first time. They really knocked it out of the park!

Every year, the 7th graders complete a collaborative grid drawing of a famous African American to celebrate Black History month. This year, we decided to honor principal Anderson who will be retiring after countless years of service at James Ward. Here is the amazing result!
Students studied the artist Claes Oldenburg and his larger than life sculptures of everyday objects. Students split into groups and chose an object that they could find in the art room. They created measurements and scaled their drawings up to 10x bigger to create their very own larger than life sculptures. After they built their structures out of items such as cardboard and newspaper, students paper mache'd their work to give it a smooth base for painting. Here is a small sample of students at work and a couple of the final pieces!
In celebration of Black History month, students in 2nd grade looked at the artwork above from Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series. In paintings and words, Lawrence told his community's story of African Americans who journeyed from the rural South to the urban North between the World Wars in search of a better life, a movement known as the Great Migration.
Students worked in teams to study the work of art seen above and were asked to respond to the work using found objects. Students collaboratively created a new work of art and explained how their new creation responds directly to the artwork of Jacob Lawrence. Here are some shots of their teamwork and final results! Students in 6th grade worked for over 10 weeks to complete these fantastical creatures! Below are snapshots of the students at work and some of their completed sculptures.
Third grade students worked together to create haunted houses using cardboard, tape, and glue! As you can see in the last photo, no two houses look alike! Students at Work:Finished Houses!Third grade students have spent the first half of October learning all about cave art! Students even got to experience a taste of what it may have been like to try and draw on the ceilings of the caves by drawing underneath their desks in the dark!
